Every Sunday is Sanctity of Life Sunday!

Image
Many of our LCMS congregations annually commemorate Sanctity of Life Sunday, typically in  January or May. This is meet, right and salutary. But consider that: EVERY Sunday, in His services to us, we receive God’s gifts of forgiveness, life and salvation won  for us in our Lord’s passion, crucifixion, death and resurrection. EVERY Sunday, we hear, read, confess, pray and sing the Sanctity of Life from feralization to  forever. EVERY Sunday and throughout the week, having received God’s gifts at church, we go forth in  sacrificial love to serve our neighbors, helping and supporting them in their physical needs, and  showing and telling them that their lives, and all lives from the moment of conception, mater  to Him and to us. Lethal Fetal Anomalies: What to Do?

Image
By Roni Grad, M.D.  The vast majority of pregnancies result in the birth of a healthy baby. Sadly, occasionally some result in babies with conditions that will significantly shorten their lives, even down to a mere few minutes. How do we respond? Medical providers often recommend that these pregnancies be terminated or that limited care be given after birth, as the life of the child will be severely limited. Many in the pro-life community are now advocating for an alternative approach, knowing that these children, however impaired, may live longer than originally expected given advances in medical care and are in the end a blessing to their families, congregations, and communities. Dan Greg “I am the living bread which came down from heaven.  If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world .”  (John 6:51, NKJV) “Faith is the divine service that receives the benefits offered by God. . .  By faith God wishes to be worshiped in this way, that we receive from Him those things which He promises and offers.” (Apology of the Augsburg Confession 4.49) “For where there is forgiveness of sins, there also is life and salvation.” (Luther’s Small Catechism 6.6) One of my favorite stories from the Gospels is Luke Chapter 7.  A woman who “ was a sinner” (v.37) comes to Jesus at the table. Despite her feelings of unworthiness, her shameful public reputation , her anxious thoughts; she knows that she needs to be with Jesus. Seemingly, she has nothi...
